Brief 07 | World Record Day - Inspiration | Artwork

Drawing inspiration from the physical vinyl themselves, I analysed a range of vinyl artwork. These as a medium are extremely expressive, their larger scale than cd's allows more intricate designs to develop and are often uniquely designed especially for their format. For this scope of research I chose to analyse vinyl releases from 2015/2016 to gain a contemporary understanding of what vinyl music is today.

Not Waving - Get Serious 12"

The first example of vinyl demonstrates how vinyl artwork can be abstractly engaging utilising a similarly bold colour palette to examples of Record Store Day posters. The Get serious 12" features no text and is filled with playfully geometric patterns that overlap to create an enigmatic vinyl cover representative of the artists sound.

Fari Bradley / Chris Weaver - Systems for a Score

The systems for a score album takes a strong inspiration from the albums concept, which interprets patterns of traditional Emirati weaves as graphic scores. Appropriately this is translated consistently into the vinyls artwork, the black background ensures the pattern is as vibrant as possible. Without context this appears as an engagingly abstract pattern however paired with the album concept fits appropriately to engage the user.

Olga Bell - Incitation

Finally, this example of artwork demonstrates how vinyl has developed within contemporary culture utilising a contemporary design direction as well as innovative production methods to create the iridescent sleeve that pairs nicely with the frosted physical vinyl. This artwork demonstrates a sophisticated design direction that feel totally different to the tone of voice of the Record Store Day posters yet demonstrates the breadth of contemporary vinyl music
