Brief 07 | World Record Day - Screen printing

Me and Rhys decided to screen print all 4 poster designs, this gives a personal design and seems more suited to the vinyl and record store culture. The colours also came out a lot better screen printed rather than digital, this is due to RGB and each of the posters are bold and contrast with one another making them work much better as a series.

each poster followed the same template -

The only thing that became different was the screen prints on the posters. The posters were first digitally printed ; this process was a lot quicker than doing a 3 colour screen print and ensured accuracy.
On the poster the address of jumbo records is stated, along with the date of record store day and times. At the bottom of the posters there are 2 logos 1 is jumbos and the other is for the world record store day event.

a2 poster

colour 1 - red
colour 2 - yellow / black

The A2 posters were originally meant to be a red background with the yellow pattern over-laid, however as seen in the image above the yellow could hardly be seen and therefore had to think again regarding the colours.
We chose black as it was the only colour suitable that would stand out from the red and matched the brand identity.

poster 01 /  A3

colour 1 - yellow
colour 2 - red

As we learnt from the A2 poster the original design which was red back ground with the yellow pattern didn't work we had to reverse this to ensure the design could be seen. This design was also Jumbos favourite design as it used the colours from the logo and seemed to being to the brand a lot more compared to the other designs.

poster 02 / a3

colour 1 - mint green
colour 2 - pink

the second poster which we did was the colours mint and pink, because the other posters are bold contrasting colours we thought to include a more subtle pallet and also have a more feminine appeal and would attract a larger audience. The logo like the others is used in the poster to create a basic pattern.

poster 03 / a3

colour 1 - orange
colour 2 - blue

For the final colour we used orange and blue, this was to contrast to the other colours used in the designs, because each of the blue designs were on the edges it became difficult to align all 4 sides and some were off, because of this we have less prints of this design.

Brief extension

To extend this brief we decided to print tote bags also. This was because we were inspired by the target audience as when exploring the in store environment we noticed 80% of the people in the store were carrying tote bags. This informed our decision to produce a range of tote bags to promote the event, this is relatively cheap to produce and can be easily manufactured alongside the the screen printed posters, this can act as secondary collateral and be used as exclusive content for the day.

tote bags

colour 1 - yellow
colour 2 - red
colour 3 - black

Rhys began by screen printing the black text on to the tote bags, however some worked better than others, this is because the screen flooded. The text was small scale which made this difficult and at least 5 of the bags became smudged or bled.

I then started to print the desired design onto the tote bags, however at times because so much ink needed to be used patches like this began to appear. However to get over this problem more ink had to be used and the ink pulled over the screen around 5 times to ensure a even print.

Again because we found out from the a2 poster that yellow on red didn't work, we had to reverse this to work on the tote bags.

The tote bags only took around 15 - 20 minutes to dry before we could put the next colour on. Therefore it was a quick process and the inks didn't run or smudge.

The final part of creating the tote bags was to heat press / iron them. By doing this it helps embed the ink into the fabric and if its washed / gets wet it insures the ink won't run.

Screen printing with Rhys was enjoyable, it took a day and a half to get everything printed but was worth it as we were both very happy with the designs. Having 2 people screen printing made the process a lot easier and we had a routine so this ensured good time management.
Not all the prints are perfect and the tote bags were the hardest to produce, however we knew this would happen otherwise we could have digital printed. But screen printing makes them unique, the colours are more vibrant and therefore stand out more, it suits the concept more of record day and the era.

Me and Rhys were going to produce another set of posters. This was meant to be a new set of posters with the bands who are playing on record store at Jumbo Records, however Jumbo did not get back to us in time with this information due to them being busy moving store.
