About Record Store Day & Jumbo Records

Record Store Day-

Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, Record Store Day was created in 2007 at a gathering of independent record store owners and employees as a way to celebrate the unique culture of vinyl music. The first Record Store Day took place on April 19, 2008. which has grown vastly in the run up to its 10th anniversary. This is a day for the people who make up the world of the record store—the staff, the customers, and the artists—to come together and celebrate the unique culture of a record store and the special role these independently owned stores play in their communities. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day. Since its conception there have been exclusive CD and Vinyl releases available on the day and the celebrations are enhanced through exciting live performances across many stores.

Jumbo Records -

Hunter Smith established Jumbo Records in September 1971, the name and logo coming from the successful disco and DJ business he was involved with called Jumbo Mobile Discotheque. The shop was started on the suggestion of an acquaintance who wanted someone to sell records at the back of his cassette and tape equipment store to encourage customers to come in, the store slowly grew gaining respect from fans of the independent music scene until in 1977 the introduction of punk rock allowed jumbo to capitalise on this growing marketplace. Growing in popularity and stature Jumbo relocated to the St. Johns Centre where it is still established as the biggest independent music store in Leeds offering a wide choice of music and in store performances to fully engage the culture of Independent record Stores.
