Brief 05 | Photography Collab - Research (Alex)

After the discussion with Alex, I got some zines together to see what styles, types, binds and colours she liked and would therefore help in going forward with the designs for her zine.

This bind was alex's favourite, having practiced the bind before I feel confident doing it, and we discussed about printing on different stocks within the zine, and this would also make the zine stand out.

The use of string around the spine of the zine was also an option however I don't like how unsecured this bind would be, especially as we discussed using inserts of smaller sizes of stock and is more likely to come loose.

- Different coloured stocks
- B&W imagery
- borders around the page
- minimal

Sparsed type and unusual is what seemed to be favourite, black stands out the best on coloured stocks.

- stretched type
- yellow and black contrast of colours
- uses majority of pages

- patterned background
- type lined with image
- split layouts

- overlay of type
- traditional gothic types
- mixed colour palettes
- image fitting to pages

- gradients of colours
- illustration mixed with type
- bold colour

- 'trendy' microsoft type
- pattern
- outline of lettering

- full page photography spread
- staple bound

Its nice that are currently featuring a page on Tracy ma's new publication, its very cut and paste and is  a style that I know Alex would be interested in. -

The spreads use a very playful but basic design, however it attracts and has a unique aesthetic. It uses a very 1990's design and uses a postmodern style, its very different and this is what makes it stand out.

Researching the zines with Alex was a big help, it informed me of what kind of elements of design she likes and how I can move forward with her zine and reflects what she likes. The kinds of look she wants is a mixture of postmodern and contemporary design, its very collective design with a lot of things going on.
Looking into Tracy Ma's work showed how cut and paste can be used within a publication and how it can attract attention both in the right and wrong ways.
