Brief 10 | Research Brief - Research 03

Poster Formats (To Educate & Inform)

Health posters produced by the NHS usually are their to inform and educate people on health issues and possible diseases or what to look out for in children. Therefore I analysed 3 posters to see what techniques and methods are used across these posters to help grab attention.

Poster 01 - this poster informs its audience to protect themselves from STI's but it also educates on the problems that one can have if they attract gonorrhoea as it states 'pissing razor blades.' The use of the bright contrast of colours and illustration helps to stand out and be seen from a far. Also the illustration can draw peoples attention as its unclear of what it is unless you read the text in the left hand corner which will also help to entice the audience. The poster is very minimal and straight to the point which is good as it can be quickly scanned by passers by and understood.

Poster 02 - This poster is to inform and educate what smoking can do to your body. Its aimed at smokers and the realness of the image creates the idea that its happening in your body, it helps to create a shock factor. The fact educates the audience what smoking 15 cigarettes can do and how this can lead to cancers. The poster uses very mono colours to exaggerate the sad reality what smokers are doing to their bodies. The poster could also be aimed at anyone as the harsh image would be enough to put anybody from smoking.

Poster 03 - Lastly poster 03 is similar to poster 01 in the way it entices an audience with bright bold contrasting colours. It uses a goal to interrupt the meaning defences to people are more likely to quickly understand what the poster is informing. It also makes it more fun using imagery like a antibiotic in a goal and makes it more relatable to people. The poster is kept fairly simple so once its seen it can be quickly and easily understood.

Analysing these 3 posters has been informative of techniques which companies such as the NHS use to inform and educate their audiences. The use of bright colours help to grab the eye and also appeal to a wider audience at it has a more fun and playful feel, slight humour is also used, this helps to make the posters more relatable and interesting. Also the posters use minimal design and so it becomes more straight to the point and can also be understood quickly by passers by. The smoking advert uses real imagery to create shock to the audience and dull colours are used to express the reality of what smoking does to the body.
