Brief 01 | Hola Paella | Research 02

Tapas restaurant market leaders

- design

- themes

- type choices

- colour

Ambiente "Independent Mediterranean Tapas Restaurant and Sherry Bar."

The overall branding of this tapas restaurant is very minimal and sophisticated. The use of the white and grey gives a chalkboard effect, symbolising a element of Spanish food stalls and markets. The logo is handwritten which also reflects the idea of the food boards, hand type for tapas seems to be used across all restaurants and therefore seems like the most deemed type for outputs like this.

Again the menu is very minimal reflecting the overall branding of ambiente, the prices on the menu are similar to Hola Paella reflecting the same kind of client. The colours are kept the same throughout in order for consistency and high quality design. They type used on the menu is a serif font, which shows a sense of tradition also representing their dishes. The menu is very easy to read and legible throughout, its easy to skim and each section of the menu is clearly titled making everything as easy as possible for the customer. However the menu doesn't reflect a very Spanish theme, as theres not a lot of colour, however elements such as a chalk board do help to reflect parts.

La Tasca "It's A Spanish Revolution!"

Again handwritten logo type for a restaurant like this is very popular, relating back to Spanish market. The use of red is consistent with the interior of the restaurant as quoted "Expect plush leather banquette seating, colorful red and yellow chairs, and pendant lighting throughout." Therefore the use of the red and yellow within the interior represents the Spanish flag, this would make it clear to customers who have never heard of this place before and would know it to be tapas.

This is a example of a 20% food off voucher, which would be found online, inside a magazine or in the window of this restaurant. The red is used and the rustic type in order for it to become more recognisable. The use of the octopus tentacles resembles a tapas food, making this design more prominent and obvious as to what food may be severed here.

The type used on this menu is slightly rustic, and fun, looking slightly handwritten also. The red is used across the whole of the branding which makes it consistent across all restaurants in the UK, making again easily relatable to customers.

Revolucion De Cuba "Whether you’re after the finest Cuban coffee, a full-on Latin feast, classic cocktails or great live music, we’ve got it all at RevoluciĆ³n de Cuba Leeds."

Doesn't represent a tapas look, the branding looks patriotic with the use of coat of arms and regal typography connoting a dynasty feel. Very plain and minimal, and doesn't represent the rest of the branding, especially on the menus.

The design of the menu is very busy, however out of the three which I have analysed this looks the most attractive and fun to fit with the theme of tapas! The use of handwritten typography again resembles a chalk board market feel, and the reds correspond with the flags colour. The menu is well organised making it easier to read and skim through.

Do's

- Clear menu organisation
- Mixture of type i.e legible and calligraphy
- Simple colours, stick to 1 - 3
- Decorative elements i.e borders, shapes
- Keep it fun!
- Include relevant themes
- Relevant design to the quality of food

Dont's

- Make the menus to  overloaded
- Over power with colour
- Use only 1 font
- Unpleasant fonts
